Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, family, friends, and those of you who came tonight purely to witness something we all thought was impossible.
Gary getting married!
For those who don't know me, I'm Gary's best man.
When Gary asked me to give this speech, he had only one request.
He said, "Please don't embarrass me."
I said, "Gary, mate, you've known me for years. You should have thought about that before asking!"
Now, tradition says a best man's speech should last about as long as the groom can perform his marital duties.
So, ladies and gentlemen...
Thank you, and goodnight!
Pause for laughter.
No, seriously, Gary. Sit down. I'm only getting started!
I've known Gary for years, and I can honestly say he's one of the most adventurous people I've ever met.
He's an adrenaline junkie.
He loves speed, danger and excitement.
If something looks dangerous, Gary wants to try it.
If something looks completely insane, Gary wants to try it twice.
And if someone says, "Gary, that's a bloody stupid idea"...
He's already halfway through it!
But there's always been one thing that absolutely terrified him.
Commitment.
For years, Gary was a bachelor.
And not just any bachelor.
Gary was so committed to bachelorhood that we were considering nominating him for a lifetime achievement award.
He had everything a single man could want.
Freedom.
Adventure.
His mates.
And a fridge containing three beers, half a lemon and something growing in a plastic container.
He called it independence.
We called it a health hazard.
Then, about a year ago, Gary met Carin.
And suddenly, the world changed.
Now, I remember when Gary first told us he'd met someone special.
Naturally, we didn't believe him.
We thought he'd finally found a woman who hadn't yet discovered his personality!
But then we met Carin.
And I must say, we were impressed.
She's beautiful, charming, intelligent and has a fantastic sense of humour.
In fact, after spending just one evening with her, we all had the same question.
"Carin, what on earth are you doing with Gary?"
We still haven't received a satisfactory answer.
But the wonderful thing about Carin is that she fitted straight into our group of friends.
She laughed at our jokes.
She joined in the fun.
And, unlike Gary, she actually knew when to stop talking!
Within weeks, we all loved her.
In fact, we held a private meeting and decided that if the relationship didn't work out, we'd keep Carin.
Gary could visit on alternate weekends.
But then something strange started happening.
Gary began changing.
Not dramatically at first.
Just little things.
He started wearing clean shirts.
He began making plans more than twenty-four hours in advance.
And then came the most disturbing development of all.
Gary started saying...
"I'll have to ask Carin."
We were horrified.
This was the man who would jump out of an aeroplane without a second thought.
Now he needed permission to go for a beer!
Then one evening, Gary announced that he was getting married.
I nearly choked.
One of the lads dropped his drink.
Another asked whether Carin was pregnant.
And somebody at the back said...
"Well, that's one way to get him to settle down!"
Gary, of course, assured us that nothing would change.
He'd still be the same adventurous, independent bloke.
He'd still make his own decisions.
And he'd still be the boss in his own home.
Carin, I must congratulate you.
You've trained him beautifully. He actually believes it!
Now, Gary, I do have some advice for you.
Marriage is built on trust, understanding and compromise.
And the sooner you understand that Carin is right, the happier your marriage will be.
There are also three phrases every married man should learn.
"I'm sorry."
"You're right."
And...
"I didn't know we were having visitors!"
Gary, you've spent years chasing danger.
You've taken risks that would make an insurance assessor burst into tears.
You've done things that most sensible people wouldn't even consider.
But today, you've taken the greatest risk of your life.
You've married a woman who knows where you live, has your phone number, and will eventually discover what you really spend on your hobbies!
And unlike your previous adventures...
There's no emergency exit!
Pause.
But seriously, ladies and gentlemen...
I'd like to say something about Carin.
Carin, you've brought something wonderful into Gary's life.
You haven't tried to turn him into somebody else.
You've embraced his adventurous spirit, matched his humour and become a much-loved part of our circle of friends.
And you've made him genuinely happy.
That means a great deal to all of us.
Gary, mate, we've had some fantastic times together.
We've laughed until our sides hurt.
We've shared adventures.
And we've occasionally done things that are probably best left out of this speech.
Especially with your new wife sitting here.
But underneath all the jokes, you're a loyal friend and a genuinely good bloke.
And seeing you standing here today with Carin makes all of us incredibly happy.
You've found someone who understands you, laughs with you and loves you for who you are.
And Carin...
You've found a man who will always bring excitement into your life.
Sometimes intentionally.
Sometimes because he's forgotten your anniversary.
But never a dull moment!
Now, before I finish, Gary, I have one final piece of advice.
A successful marriage is like a good adventure.
You need courage, patience, a sense of humour and the ability to recognise danger before it's too late.
And if Carin ever says...
"Do whatever you think is best, darling."
Don't.
Just don't.
It's not a suggestion.
It's a test.
Ladies and gentlemen, would you please raise your glasses.
To Gary and Carin.
May your lives be filled with love, laughter, friendship and wonderful adventures.
May you always support each other, laugh together and never lose the spark that brought you together.
And Gary...
You spent years looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush.
Well, congratulations, mate.
You've finally found one that lasts a lifetime!
To the happy couple!
🥂
